Big Waves, Then and Now

My name is Rodney Kajidrik. I’m 17-year-old Marshallese boy living in Majuro.
In 2008 there was an incident where huge waves came on land. Several houses were badly affected at that time. The waves also engulfed this part of the island.

Not only were residents affected, schools were affected as well and Marshall Island High School was one of them. Big rocks came on land, making it quite difficult to clean up. The dumpsite didn’t look good either. Rocks came over, as well as other things. Garbage was spread all over our land, and it wasn’t a pleasant sight. Well, that’s my story of the wave in 2008.

The smallest change in sea levels will have a big impact on our islands. Even a small rise of a few centimeters in the sea level will affect our islands with a very big wave and in a very big way.
