Vaiala Beach School Adapts

I‘ve always wondered why Vaiala Beach School is up on a hill in Vailima instead of at the beach in Vaiala. I spoke to Lorraine Williams the principal of VBS and she told me this is why we moved:

VBS was originally built in Vaiala, and then in 1990 Cyclone Ofa hit the school. There were big boulders which hit the school and strong waves which crashed against the building. All the equipment was under sand and water. All that is left of the old school are some steps. So they moved to an old building at Apia Park. Then in1991 Cyclone Bal hit the school so they decided to move again because there weren’t enough facilities for everyone (there was only one bathroom in the whole school!)

So Vaiala Beach School was moved up the hill to Vailima. Lorraine says the move was caused by changing weather patterns.

Now I wonder, why doesn’t the name change to Vailima Hill School?
